Mixed Media Mobiles

Because the age range for this class was 5 - 12 years old, I prepped the framework for the mobile before the class. I used two chopsticks for each, and wove a small God's Eye at the centre (instruction for God's Eye here).

To make 'hooks' for the mobile to be hung from, I used some craft wire. Firstly I placed a chopstick (about 1 inch from the end) in the centre of a 10cm piece of wire, wound it tightly a couple of times in one direction. Then I wound it a couple of times in the other direction.

Next, I twisted the wires together as tightly as I could a few times.

I used the remaining wire to fashion into small circles, and repeated this on each chopstick end. To neaten the wire up and stop the loops from being sharp, I wrapped each in electrician's tape. This also made the loops more sturdy.

On each table, I put out a selection of wool/twines/leather, bells, feathers, wire, buttons and recycled bits and pieces.

Blending Colours

We had a colourful class today, learning how to draw organic and crystalline forms and then adding at least three colours to them. I showed the class how to blend their chosen colours together, gently overlapping and blending the each colour into the next. Have a look at the wonderful results:

Painted Masks

We held a very fun and glittery mask workshop for kids at Katoomba Library these holidays! The class explored mask art and meanings from different cultures around the world, before designing and painting their own mask creations.

Materials:

Plain paper mâché masks
Lead pencils
Acrylic paint and brushes
Sharpies and regular textas
Glitter
Diamontes (adhesive)
Googly eyes (adhesive)
Thin paper scraps for hair
Masking tape

We used Sharpies and textas for detail, acrylic paint for larger areas. To add glitter, students sprinkled glitter gently over wet paint. Diamontes and google eyes were stuck on when the surface was dry. Masking tape was used on the back of the mask to attach hair.

Eric Carle Insect Collage

First class up for the Spring school holidays was Eric Carle Insect Collage. The class learned some interesting insect facts before using paper painted with various colours and textures (already dry) to create collages with ladybirds, dragonflies, butterflies, bees and more. Loving the results!

Painted Flowerpots

Presented with plain white flowerpots to decorate, the students from Springwood art class last Thursday were first asked to create a couple of drawn designs on paper before diving in with permanent markers. Luckily, lead pencil could also be used to outline the designs on the surface of the pots prior to using the markers. Here are several of the great pots in progress:

Winter Scene Snow Globes

Our first holiday class for kids aged 6 - 12 years these holidays was Snow Globes with a winter theme, held at Katoomba Library. We used Cleverpatch globes, which you can open to insert your artworks into. The designs were coloured in with bright markers in order to make images pop through all the glitter snow. Some of Winter designs chosen by students were: penguins, snowy landscapes, snowmen, dragons, bunnies and foxes.

Below are just a few of the cool results!
